12 years ago: Record October snowfall in the lowlands

On October 28, there was snow in the morning
It had already snow during the night of Sunday, October 28th. The snow measurements taken daily at 7 a.m. had already record a few centimeters of fresh snow in many places. Above 500 to 600 meters, there was more than 10 cm of snow in places, for example 11 cm in Zurich. Fluntern and 15 cm in Pfäffikon ZH. And the Mervelier station in the Jura report. As much as 28 cm.

On October 29  partly record October snow

A strong northerly position subsequently brought moist polar air to the northern side of the Alps. The snowfall continu, so that the next morning at 7 a.m. new October snow records were record in some parts of the central and eastern foothills of the Alps: in St. Gallen there was 33 cm, in Langnau im Emmental it was 30 cm. But there was also 19 cm of snow in Zurich-Fluntern. In the lowest areas there was significantly less snow, in some places the new snow did not stick at all and quickly melt away again.

The temperatures were correspondingly low

 

On October 28, 2012, the temperature barely rose above 1 or 2 degrees even in the lowlands. Only in western Switzerland and on the southern side of the Alps was it a little less cold. 2024: A very mild October finale
We are far from such conditions in October this year. The second half of October is be numbers milder than average in all parts of the country (the final monthly report will be drawn up here in a few days).

Sunday was no exception. The lowest temperatures at night were mild 9 to 11 degrees, and in the afternoon temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees were record, which is also high for the time of year. In Valais and the Rhine Valley, temperatures rose to over 20 degrees at times with a tendency towards the foehn, reaching their highest in Vaduz at 21.7 degrees.
